Advanced Medical Directive

Having a Living Will

An Advanced Medical Directive is a document which expresses your views on how you want to be treated (or not) if you are unable to make decisions about your treatment.

It makes clear to your carers (doctors/nurses) and your family whether you want to undergo certain treatment or not, including refusal for life-sustaining treatment. There are a number of safe-guards included in an AMD and you can express your reasons for having a AMD if you so wish.

You may want to make a AMD if you have strong feelings about a particular situation that could arise in the future. Often people want to do this if they have been told they have a terminal illness or form of dementia. Making a AMD may give you peace of mind knowing that your wishes should not be ignored if you are unable to take part in the decision-making process at the relevant time.
